Flat feet, also known as fallen arches, is a foot condition where the arch of the foot is either very low or non-existent. Flat feet are not a problem as long as they don’t cause discomfort, but they are often associated with over pronation, a foot condition that creates a lot of stress on the feet and ankles, and that can cause pain and discomfort. People who over pronate are also more susceptible to injuries. Over pronation is when the foot rolls too far inward toward the arch of the foot.
What causes it? Flat feet can be hereditary, but they can also be caused by weak arches, heel or ankle injury, arthritis, certain nervous system diseases, obesity, activities involving repeated pounding of the foot on a hard surface, and damage to the posterior tibial tendon.
How is it prevented and treated? Over pronation can be treated with insoles that provide good arch support and shoes for flat feet that feature a firm heel counter and wide soles. The best men’s shoes for flat feet are men’s orthopedic shoes with arch support that properly align the foot and reduce over pronation. Ultimately, the best men’s walking shoes for flat feet or best men’s walking shoes for pronation should fit comfortably and should support the medial arch of the foot. In addition to wearing proper men’s orthopedic insoles, flat feet shoes for men and anti-pronation shoes for men, performing exercises that strengthen the arches and the muscles surrounding them can help too.
